“When things don't work well in the bedroom, they don't work well in the living room either.”

Bed Skirts

Picture of Bed Skirts. We name bed skirt the decorative covering that starts hanging from the bottom of a bed mattress all the way to the floor. A bed skirt has a lot of practical purposes, transforming the empty area under your bed in a storage place, preventing dust from getting under it. No matter the initial function of the bed skirt, nowadays it is accepted as part of the bed set and also plays an important decorative role.

Bed skirts are mostly bought because of their decorative aspect. You can find them in all colours, textures, patterns; they can either come as a set along with the bedding sharing the same design, or they can be bought individually, and in this situation, most bed skirts have relatively neutral designs so they can match any type of beddings.

Bed skirts, like the rest of the bedding accessories, has sizes to adjust to, so they come in the same sizes beds do, single, twin, double, queen and king sizes. If we consider the height size, it then depends on each bed and measurements are necessary. There is however a standard drop and that is 15 inches long. In case the standard size does not perfectly match your drop size, but is getting close to it, things might work; although dust will get under the bed, you will still be able do deposit things and keep the elegant atmosphere a bed skirt can create. But if the standard bed skirt is very short, then all the bed skirt’s purposes are being ruined. It is not advisable under any circumstances.

The real style and classiness comes from the bed skirts’ sewing. There are bed skirts that have pleats, they can be decorated with ruffles, they can come as a flat panel, and you can have more types of fabrics sewed together for a bigger visual and tactile impact of the bed skirt. You may choose beads decorations, embroideries, lace, ribbons and many more bed skirt mouldings.

Of course it is more tempting to buy a bed set and also have the perfectly matching bed skirt; it is more comfortable and also cheaper since it comes as a set. And most of the times this really is a good idea, but not always. Make sure you carefully check the material when purchasing the bed skirt. If you buy the entire set, all pieces are made from the same material; in most cases the manufacturers use lightweight materials in order to favour the comforters and shams that are usually heavier. The only problem here is that bed skirts need to be made out of heavier material so that the drop is perfect, otherwise they can look funny. Advisable textures for great looking bed skirts are: faux suede, velvet and chenille. Also if you go for light, pastel colours you should choose a heavier texture that is not see-through.

After deciding on the pattern, the colour and all the other details, make sure you check out the washing instruction label, and before arranging it to your bed launder it for a perfectly neat and professional appearance.
