Normally the flat bed sheet can
be used as both top sheet and bottom sheet, but the fitted one serves only as bottom sheet.
The fitted sheets have elastic parts in all its corners so that it can be attached to the
mattress and prevent it from sliding off the mattress during a night of
use.
Lots of changes have happened
over yeas as well with the bed sheets’ colour and texture. Initially they were all white same
as the whole bed linen, but nowadays they come in various colours, prints, even
pictures.
Also the fibre used for bed
sheets have changed. It used to be cotton and linen, followed
by a mixture of cotton and polyester. You can also find satin, silk, rayon and even bamboo
fibres used for bed sheets these days.
There are certain things you
need to know when buying bed sheets. First you need to make sure you have the right
measurements of your bed. Knowing only the terms of queen bed or king bed won’t help you
enough. These are vague terms since all manufacturers have their own different sizes for
queen or king beds. The right thing to do is note on a piece of paper the exact dimensions of
the length, width and thickness of your mattress, and make sure you don’t forget the paper
home when you go bed sheets shopping.
Another important factor is the
quality of the bed sheets you intend to buy. You can find the indicator for that on the
manufacturer’s label. The number written there is the result of number of threads per square
inch of material. We can usually say that the bigger the number is the finer the material is,
but there are some exceptions as well. Still we recommend not buying any material under 175
thread counts.
You must choose the appropriate
material you want for your bed sheets. Cotton is considered the most comfortable material but
maybe you plan on a romantic evening and in that situation nothing is more appropriate than
satin. In case you want your bed sheets to warm you during cold winter nights you should go
for flannel but if you want to escape of the hot summer night you should consider silk
instead.
One last advice: you should always buy more
sheets than you think you need, you can never have too many and make sure you check the
washing instructions carefully and follow hem thoroughly.
